Under-Graduate MBBS Course – The Union Territory of Chandigarh till 1991 did not have any Under Graduate course of MBBS. The allowing of Government Medical College Chandigarh with under-graduate course of MBBS in Chandigarh was a long overdue.
Till 1991 the residents of Chandigarh were aware of only Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMR) Chandigarh.
Opportunity for Chandigarh – The students of Chandigarh till 1991 never had the opportunity to make a career in medicine due to the imposing restrictions of domicile. This hindrance to the students from the Union Territory of Chandigarh had to overcome.
Directorate of Medical Education & Research – The lack of a medical college for the students of Chandigarh changed in 1991. The Chandigarh administration set up Directorate of Medical Education & Research, which is the pre-requisite to start a medical college.
With the permission of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the medical college was set up and the foundation stone ceremony done by the former Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Chandra Shekhar on January 20, 1991.
University Affiliations – The Government Medical College Chandigarh was given the provisional affiliation by Panjab University in 1991 followed by the permanent affiliation in 1999. Today Union Territory of Chandigarh is proud of Government Medical College Chandigarh producing so many brilliant doctors who later made into post-graduation courses in AIIMS Delhi, PGIMR Chandigarh and so on.
Medical Journal – The Government Medical College Chandigarh also publishes a bi-annual medical journal comprising of articles with clinical interest and implications with the scope to cover clinical studies related to aspects of medical sciences.
